Coffee and Conversation – March 20, 2018
Framing the Dialogue on Traffic Safety to Advance Safe Systems
Lucinda Austin
Assistant Professor, School of Media and Journalism, UNC-CH
How effective are mass mediated communication campaigns at driving large-scale behavior change and what can contribute to their effectiveness? We explored this question and more, as we dove into the effects of strategic communication campaigns (both intended and unintended consequences). We examined how to design effective messages and campaigns, utilizing psychology theory for message design and frameworks like social marketing. Case examples included the success of drunk driving campaigns and current initiatives to reduce distracted driving.
