Sharing the Road with Robots: Considerations For Incorporating Automated Vehicle Technology into a Safe Roadway System

Michael Clamann
Duke, Humans and Autonomy Lab, Pratt School of Engineering; Associate Director, CSCRS

The deployment of autonomous vehicles on U.S. highways introduces the possibility of dramatically reducing the number of injuries and fatalities attributed to “human error.” But lessons from other domains, like aviation, show that adding new advanced technology to a system can also introduce new challenges and exchange old problems for new ones. In this conversation, we discuss technology, policy and social issues surrounding their deployment, and contemplate the question of “how safe is safe enough?” for their release.

When: May 22, 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.

Where: 730 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd #300, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 – 3rd floor
